The 1,000 origami cranes folded and strung together by Hideo and Yoshiko Yamazaki of Japan took nearly three months to make. The Yamazakis wanted to show their sympathy and to pray for the families and victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon. The couple's daughter, Hiroko, a Georgetown University student here, presented the cranes to Defense Department officials Jan. 15, 2002. Photo by Rudi Williams.
