Army Col. Thom M. Besch, Missile Defense Agency Alaska region director, describes components of the ground-based missile interceptor. While the interceptors look like missiles, no explosive warheads are attached. The 54-foot-6-inch main body acts as a booster vehicle, propelling into space the embedded kill vehicle, which basically steers itself into the path of an oncoming warhead, causing an explosion on impact.
