ERDC Biologist Lynde Dodd and LakeSource Aquatic's Austin Rafter conduct a precision herbicide application to target the invasive two-horned water chestnut at Lake Brittle in Warrenton, Virginia, June 25, 2025. The invasive species form dense surface mats that limit sunlight to native plants, reduce oxygen exchange, and threaten water quality. The demonstration project uses an EPA-approved herbicide through federal, state, and local agency partnerships to prevent the species from taking over aquatic habitats. Treatment areas will reopen within two hours once chemicals take effect. The long-term benefits include improved recreational access, enhanced water quality, and protection of Chesapeake Bay watersheds.
