Advancing Respiratory Infection Surveillance at Vaziani Military Base in Georgia: A WRAIR-EME Initiative

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Europe-Middle East (WRAIR-EME) is collaborating with local investigators at Vaziani Military Base in Georgia to conduct a continuous, monthly surveillance study of infectious respiratory illnesses. This study, which began in January 2025, aims to determine the specific viral and bacterial causes of these infections and to assess how well they respond to different antimicrobial treatments. Vaziani Military Base is a strategically important location providing medical support to military personnel. Respiratory infections are a major concern for military readiness due to factors like close living conditions, training stress, and international travel. As of May 2025, the study has collected 15 samples and identified pathogens including Influenza B, H1N1, and Adenovirus. Identifying these threats is a high priority for EUCOM and allied forces involved in operations and training exercises in the region. This surveillance initiative is crucial for strengthening the health security of both Georgian and allied military forces. Beyond that, it contributes to public health knowledge by providing insights into how respiratory pathogens spread between military and civilian populations. Ultimately, the study’s findings will help EUCOM make informed decisions about health threats and build resilience against existing and emerging infectious diseases.
