Dr. Stephen Ferrara, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, holds a sepsis biochip created by Airmen and civilians at the Clinical Investigation Facility in conjunction with Airmen at the Phoenix Spark Innovation Cell at David Grant USAF Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base, California, June 10, 2025. The biochip is a novel point of care testing device that detects multiple types of sepsis pathogens 150 times faster than current “gold standard” laboratory tests. This rapid, lightweight, field deployable device has been awarded a provisional patent and can be used in austere environments to enhance prolonged field care and improve survival rates for our warfighters.
