Allentown Honorary First Defender, 3rd vice commander, retired Lt. Col. Don Davis, conducts call of the roll, naming all 49 Allentown militia members known as the Allen Infantry, that left Allentown, April 18, 1861, to help defend Washington, D.C., during the Civil War. The ceremony is held yearly, April 18, in front of the Ignatz Greeser statue in West Park to commemorate that day. Ignatz Greeser was the only Allentown native to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism during the Civil War. The ceremony is held annually, April 18 by the Allentown Honorary First Defenders organization that consists of patriotic businessmen and women, retired military personnel and others who are dedicated to preserve military tradition and support local military units.
