Lt. Col. Jeremy C. Williams, commander 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery Regiment briefs Brig. Gen. Shawn Fuellenbach, assistant adjutant general of the Utah National Guard on “degraded” gunnery during his battalion’s annual training at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, June 5. Degraded gunnery is when the computer system that usually assists operation of the weapon system is either turned off or not functioning and the gun crew reverts to manual aiming and operation of their M109A6 Paladin howitzers. Soldiers train in degraded posture to maintain their skillset, which ensures firing capabilities in any situation without the aid of GPS and other modern technology.
