U.S. Army Capt. (Chaplain) Nicholas Stavlund, assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, speaks at a D-Day 81 ceremony honoring U.S. Army Capt. Father Ignatius Maternowski, the only American military chaplain killed on D-Day, in Guetteville, Normandy, France, June 4, 2025. A member of the 82nd Airborne Division’s 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Father Maternowski volunteered to cross enemy lines to negotiate medical care for wounded troops and was killed in the act of compassion. His legacy endures as a symbol of courage, faith, and selfless service.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward stationed in Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build readiness and strengthen the alliance.
