World War II veterans pay their respects at the C-47 Memorial Garden in Picauville, France, June 4, 2025, honoring the memory of 20 American soldiers killed when their aircraft was shot down on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Among the fallen were 16 paratroopers from Charlie Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The memorial, shaped like a Douglas C-47 Skytrain and lined with tulip trees—one for each soldier—serves as a poignant tribute to their sacrifice and a reminder of the cost of freedom.
The ceremony was attended by U.S. Army paratroopers and members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, the Army’s Contingency Response Force in Europe. Headquartered in Italy and Germany, the brigade is capable of rapidly deploying forces across the U.S. European, African and Central Command areas of responsibility. Sky Soldiers routinely train alongside NATO allies and partners to enhance readiness and reinforce collective defense.
