SOUTH CHINA SEA (May 12, 2025) Cmdr. Rich Mayer from Virginia Beach, Virginia, coordinates with the Combat Infromation Center over the phone from the pilot house of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65), while Benfold conducts routine operations in the South China Sea. Benfold is forward deployed and assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy’s Largest DESRON and U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force.
