YOKOSUKA, Japan (May 29, 2025) — Senior Chief Culinary Specialist Rodolfo Elston grills sausages at the Commodore Matthew C. Perry General Mess Open Galley BBQ Event onboard Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) May 29, 2025. The Jewel of the East, the general mess' nickname, hosted the event on Niku Day, a food-base pun. The numbers 2 and 9 are ni and kyu in Japanese. When said quickly, it can sound like Niku, the Japanese word for meat. For over 75 years, CFAY has provided, maintained, and operated base facilities and services supporting the U.S. 7th Fleet’s forward-deployed naval forces, tenant commands, and thousands of military and civilian personnel and their families.
