Michael George, assigned to the 642nd Engineer Support Company, 41st Engineer Battalion, with Joint Task Force–Southern Border, pulls security beside a newly installed New Mexico National Defense Area (NMNDA) sign near Cloverdale, N.M., May 25, 2025. The sign emplacement mission is part of a targeted effort to clearly mark designated defense areas, even in the most austere environments along the southern border. Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, Joint Task Force–Southern Border aligns efforts to seal the southern border and repel illegal activity and is responsible for full-scale, agile, and all-domain operations, which will allow for more effective and efficient DoD operations.
