ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Apr. 29,2025) U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen participate in a capstone project calledProject Archimedes. The goal of their project was to see if Project Archimedeswas possible or just a myth. According to the legend Archimedes, a Greek andthe father of engineering, has his Greek soldiers take their polished metalshields to reflect sunlight onto invading Roman ships and set them on fire inan attempt to stop an invasion. In conclusion, U.S. Naval Academy professor Dr. Fishman stated “Today, the Midshipmen of Project Archimedes, assisted bya few volunteers, succeeded in setting a small boat on fire using the energy ofthe Sun." As the undergraduate college of our country's naval service, theNaval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers ofcompetence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
