YOKOSUKA, Japan (April 26, 2025) - The City of Yokosuka held the annual Kanrin Maru Festival Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Uraga Dock in the city's south eastern district. The free two-day festival honors Kanrin Maru, Japan’s first screw-driven steam warship and the first Japanese vessel to cross the Pacific Ocean. The family-friendly event includes carnival games, live performances and kitchen cars, alongside exhibitions commemorating Japan’s maritime history and early international diplomacy. Originally built in the Netherlands and later acquired by the Tokugawa shogunate, Kanrin Maru departed Uraga for San Francisco on Feb. 9, 1860. Following the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, the ship accompanied the USS Powhatan, which carried a Japanese diplomatic delegation to the United States as part of the nation’s first formal embassy to America.
