The U.S. Navy launched the first Polaris A1P-5 missile from the submerged USS George Washington (SSBN 598) on July 20, 1960, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Polaris was a two-stage ballistic missile powered by solid fuel rocket motors and guided by a self-contained inertial guidance system independent of external commands or control. The Polaris A1 was in service from November 1960 until October 1965.
