Jamie Myers, Medical Microbiology Technologist II, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, reaches into an ultra-low laboratory freezer containing pure isolates of multi-drug resistant organisms in WRAIR’s Multidrug-Resistant Organism Repository and Surveillance Network labs, Silver Spring, Maryland, July 9, 2024. The MRSN is the Department of Defense’s only large-scale repository of multidrug-resistant bacterial isolates, and it serves as the primary surveillance organization for antibiotic-resistant bacteria across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. These lab freezers store isolates of MRDOs that have been received from around the world, making up a repository of over 82,000 bacterial samples. The MRSN receives over 1,000 new isolates per month, and they are used in numerous studies at other research agencies as well as at WRAIR.
