Some soldiers in attendance had red, watery eyes and runny noses while others were just fine. One soldier, Spc. Maryline Bett, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 53rd Movement Control Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, stood strong as she raised her right hand promising to serve and protect the United States of America from all enemies, foreign and domestic. You could see tears in both of her eyes, but it might not be from the emotion of having just reenlisted, but from the CS in the air while the ceremony took place on the Fort Eustis Nuclear Biological Chemical Range March 21. The other soldiers in the room who were just fine wore their M40 Pro Mask blocking all particles of CS from their lungs. It was not your typical reenlistment ceremony which for those in attendance, including Bett, but it will leave a lasting memory, or at least, a bad taste in your mouth.
“Specialist Bett wasn’t sure about reenlisting but I knew she had a real good feel about. She wasn’t sure when and where to do but I told her a real ‘Whoa’ way we could do it was to do it while in the gas chamber. Thank goodness Lt. Col Stephen Ledbetter (53rd MCB commander) was willing to do it,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Ulrich, HHD retention noncommissioned officer.
It was Bett’s choice to make the commitment and sacrifice for her country but it will not be one she will regret. “I am doing it in the CS chamber because it sounded fun, but I reenlisted for three years because I really enjoy my job. I wasn’t sure I would stay in the Army … but I did, and I am happy for it,” said the Dallas, Texas, native.
