A military briefing or meeting is taking place indoors, involving personnel in two distinct camouflage uniforms — one consistent with Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) pattern and the other with U.S. Marine Corps MARPAT pattern. A JGSDF soldier appears to be presenting or speaking to a seated audience of mixed military personnel. The setting suggests a joint military exercise or bilateral training event.

Japan Ground Self-Defense Force 1st Lt. Naohide Shio interprets for JGSDF Capt. Tomoyuki Adachi during the command post exercise portion of Exercise Forest Light 13-3 Feb. 26 at the Hokkaido-Dai Maneuver Area in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan. The CPX provided an opportunity for the JGSDF members and Marines to hone their communication skills and learn from each others’ unique experiences and expertise, better preparing them for a unified approach to future contingencies. Shio is an interpreter, and Tomoyuki is a liaison officer, both with the 11th Infantry Regiment, 7th Armored Division, Northern Army, JGSDF. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Pfc. Ronald K.
