    U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Matthew Doerr, a fixed-wing aircraft mechanic signals to Capt. Scott Carpenter, an F/A-18 Hornet aircraft pilot, both with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, at Japan Air Self-Defense Force Komatsu Air Base, Ishikawa, Japan during exercise Keen Sword 25, Oct. 28, 2024. VMFA-312 is temporarily augmenting MAG-12, 1st MAW, under the Unit Deployment Program, which aims to provide squadrons stationed in the continental United States with experience training in the Indo-Pacific. Keen Sword is a biennial, joint and bilateral field-training exercise involving U.S. military and Japan Self-Defense Force personnel, designed to increase readiness and interoperability while strengthening the ironclad U.S.-Japan alliance.
