Chaplains from the Department of Pastoral Care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center conducted the Blessing of the Animals service in front of the historic Tower on Oct. 8. Walter Reed's facility dogs and Red Cross volunteer and patient service dogs assembled alongside their handlers and owners for the service, which began with remarks from Franciscan Friar Brother David W. Schlatter from the Department of Pastoral Care. The blessing of the animals is often associated with St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and is typically held on his feast day, Oct. 4. (DOD Photo by Christian Lilakos)
