The U.S. Navy’s 22nd, but fourth submerged, launch of the Trident I C4 from the USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657) at 2 p.m. on July 14, 1979, off the East Coast of Florida. The Trident I was a three-stage, solid-propellant, inertially guided, submarine-launched fleet ballistic missile. It boasted a greater range and payload than its predecessors.
