Command Sgt. Maj. Phillip Barber was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service as the 14th State Command Sergeant Major for the Illinois Army National Guard. Barber assumed his duties as the State CSM in November 2022. Barber has accepted a sergeant major position with First Army on Rock Island Arsenal. Maj. Gen. Rodney Boyd presented Barber with the MSM and a sword commemorating his service as the state CSM. The presentation was on Sept. 11 at the Illinois National Guard's readiness center on the campus of Heartland Community College in Normal.
