Thomas is a member of Detachment 221 of the 122nd Engineer Battalion, a South Carolina National Guard unit based at the Batesville Armory. The unit traveled to Beaufort to participate in Vigilant Guard 2008, one of the largest disaster response training exercises in the history of the National Guard. The exercise brings together more than 3,000 Soldiers and Airmen from more than a dozen states to respond to a simulated earthquake centered near Beaufort.
