U.S. and Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) service members deployed to Matsushima Air Base for Exercise Valiant Shield 24, along with Higashimatsushima city officials, participate in a community cleanup at Nobiru beach, Higashimatsushima city, Miyagi, Japan, June 15, 2024. Japan’s participation in Valiant Shield 24 was partly in thanks for the support of their allies during Operation Tomodachi, where approximately 24,000 U.S. service members helped with recovery and relief, cleaning Nobiru beach following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster. Exercises such as Valiant Shield allows the Indo-Pacific Command Joint Forces the opportunity to integrate forces from all branches of service and with our allies to conduct precise, lethal, and overwhelming multi-axis, multi-domain effects that demonstrate the strength and versatility of the Joint Force and our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
