The U.S. Navy launched the second developmental flight test model of the new Trident II D-5 missile at 12:25 p.m. on March 17, 1987, from Complex 46A at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The D5 is a three-stage, solid propellant, inertially guided fleet ballistic missile launched underwater from the Ohio-class submarines.
