U.S. Army Pfc. Eduardo Perez-Mandieta, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency short term individual augmentee (STIA), screens soil during a recovery mission in Italy, May 25, 2024. STIA recovery team members from the 173rd Airborne Brigade provided the bulk of augmentee team members, lending their military occupational specialty expertise on the site to support and enhance recovery operations. Team members inspect debris to ensure incident related material is saved for further inspection while other material is discarded. There are approximately 72,091 personnel missing from World War II.
