U.S. Navy archive image of USS Harder (SS 257) crew following a rescue party for downed airman. Caption on original image notes: "Members of the crew man the rubber boat alongside the U.S.S. HARDER, the submarine that performed one of the most striking rescue incidents of the Pacific War recently. Not only did they pick up the flier, Lt. (jg) John R. Galvin, USNR, Burlington, Iowa, from an enemy held island, but they carried him along as a member of their crew until they returned to base. During the rescue operation, armed members of the crew covered the proceedings expecting Japanese treachery. More recently, the Navy Department has announced the U.S.S. Harder presumed lost on patrol." U.S. Navy archive image
