The cross, located at the Army's 81st Infantry Regiment Memorial on Peleliu Island, stands as a memorial to the soldiers who gave their lives during the battle. After 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, sustained more than 60 percent casualties, Gen. Roy Geiger, commander of the III Amphibious Corps, sent the Army's 81 to relieve the regiment.
