Meet U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Roger Ball, a 25A signal officer with Charlie Company, 29th Infantry Division. Ball works in the logistical and planning section for Immediate Response 24 at the Drawsko Combat Training Center in Poland.
The Virginia Army National Guard Officer, who is also a Platoon Leader, is using this opportunity to develop himself and his peers. During his time at Immediate Response 24, Ball looks forward to honing in on his skill sets and accomplishing the mission that started planning months and executing with our NATO allies.
“It's a great opportunity to have, especially as a 2LT, being able to lead a platoon that will train side by side with our NATO partners, learning how they do things and adapt to the different cultures and languages,” said Ball.
Coming from a military family, Ball was commissioned in the U.S. Army, following in the footsteps of both his parents. Ball stated, “When I look back at my family’s history in the different branches of the U.S. military, I strive to accept the challenge of continuing the legacy.”
DEFENDER is the Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness, and is a U.S. European Command scheduled, U.S. Army Europe and Africa conducted exercise that consists of Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. DEFENDER 24 is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise, and DoD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, taking place from 28 March to 31 May. DEFENDER 24 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations, including Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
