U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Nathan Hollandsworth, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) short term individual augmentee (STIA) independent duty medical technician (IDMT), fills buckets of soil with water during a recovery mission in Italy, April 27, 2024. Since the renewal of U.S. POW/MIA recovery efforts in the 1970s, the remains of nearly 1,000 Americans killed in World War II have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. This number is in addition to the roughly 280,000 Americans whose remains were identified in a massive effort immediately after the war. There are approximately 72,091 personnel missing from World War II. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Cole Yardley)
