U.S. Marines with command element, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, receive challenge coins from Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Maj. Gen. Hajime Kitajima, the commanding general of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade during the Camp Ainoura 69th anniversary, held at Camp Ainoura, Sasebo, Japan, March 20, 2024. The challenge coins being awarded to the Marines act as a token of appreciation from the JGSDF for supporting Ainoura Day as well as the effort in maintaining a strong partnership between the two militaries. The U.S.-Japan alliance is a cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
