Frances E. Hook, who served in the 11th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War disguised as a man, was one of the women researched by Lt. Col. Danni Leone, the site director for the Medical Readiness Training Command's Regional Training Site-Medical, Camp Parks, Calif., for her 2019 master's thesis, "Women Who Wear the Breeches: The Representation of Female Civil War Soldiers in Mid-Nineteenth Century Newspapers." The colonel said Hook was reported to have won the universal esteem of all of her officers. In April 1864, Hook was captured by Confederate forces and was shot in the leg during an escape attempt. Despite the wound, the Confederate soldiers handcuffed and shackled her for a subsequent march of several miles. (Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress)
