US delivers humanitarian aid to Zambia

Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) Director General professor Roma Chilengi shakes hands with U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Thomas (Blake) Sorrell, Office of Security Cooperation, U.S. Embassy in Zambia, following a ceremony to mark the transfer of $30,000 in aid material from the U.S. to Zambia in support of their response to a cholera outbreak, March 15, 2024, ZNPHI, Lusaka, Zambia. According to the ZNPHI, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partner, Zambia began combating a cholera outbreak in October 2023 that has inflicted a cumulative fatality rate of 3.6%. The CDC cites a case fatality rate of less than 1% for cholera when access to “adequate and timely rehydration” is available. The aid material included 33,000 oral rehydration salts packets, 50 drums of combined granules of chlorine, liquid chlorine and oral rehydration salts and more than 3,500 containers of chlorine. The U.S. Department of Defense funded the material through its Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid Appropriation, which aims to build capacity in partner nation governments to provide essential humanitarian services to the civilian population and supports efforts to reduce the risk of, prepare for and respond to humanitarian disasters.
