Sunburst Youth Academy Candidate Ashley Gomez Jauregui cries while reciting the academy’s candidate oath with a family member on intake day, July 16, 2023, at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. For the next five months, Gomez and other candidates will become cadets who will live and go to school on the base. Cadets will not see their parents or guardians until October and the rest of their family until November.
