Walter Reed’s Pastoral Care Department marked the beginning of Hanukkah, the ‘Festival of Lights,’ on Dec 7, 2023. The menorah lighting ceremony, held in the America Zone, Bldg. 19, was officiated by Navy Capt. Chris Hester, Army Maj. David Ruderman, Imam Mohamed Khan, and Rabbi Randy Brown, sharing various cultural customs of this Jewish festival.
Walter Reed Director, Navy Capt. Melissa Austin, also attended the ceremony, and contributed as a speaker.
Hanukkah, or the ‘Festival of Lights,’ is a Jewish festival that commemorates the recovery and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. The lightening of the Hanukkah menorah symbolically honors the miracle of a one-day supply of pure oil miraculously lasting eight days.
