Chris Purcell, commanding officer aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), left, thanks Chair Naval Services Earl Committee Peter Sweetser of the New York Yacht Club for presenting Wasp a photograph of USS Wasp (1893), the seventh ship to bear the name, in the wardroom aboard Wasp, Dec. 4, 2023. Columbia was a steam powered Yacht owned by the New York Yacht Club that the Navy acquired, renamed to Wasp, and commissioned as an armed vessel in 1898. Wasp is in Naval Station Norfolk participating in Phibron/MEU Integration (PMINT) during Integrated Phase inspections and assessments in preparation for a scheduled future deployment.
