U.S. Army National Guard Soldier, Staff Sgt. Chris Hanna, from Idaho National Guard’s 101st Civil Support Team strengthened his skill of responding to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies during training on Oct. 25, 2023 at Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho.

The scenario involved a chemical combination that formed into a hazardous agent and could cause a harmful reaction to Guardsmen at one of the workout rooms on base. In the scenario, a custodian unintentionally mixed two cleaning products that presented a hazardous reaction, prompting the 101st CST to spring into action.

In another exercise scenario, a Guardsman’s HAZMAT suit became compromised while he was collecting samples of the hazardous agents within the contaminated building. He was medically extracted, allowing the Guardsmen to sharpen their medical response skills in addition to the HAZMAT training. (U.S. National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Becky Vanshur)
