Marine Corps crew chiefs assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 162 (Reinforced), 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) launch an Autonomous Lagrangian Thermometric Observer (ALTO) from a CH-53E Super Stallion in the Gulf of Aden, Oct. 18. The ALTO is a subsurface drifting float which surfaces periodically to transmit oceanographic data via satellite. Once deployed by either ship or aircraft, ALTO will provide several years of completely automated measurements of ocean temperatures, salinity, and currents. This marks this first time that the ALTO was deployed from a CH-53 Super Stallion integrating Navy-Marine Corps capabilities. This Components of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East region.
