GULF OF ADEN (Oct. 18, 2023) From left to right, Aerographer’s Mate 3rd Class Timothy Bright, assigned to the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), Cpl. Aidan Vigneux and Gunnery Sgt. Dean Sayre, both assigned to Marine Medium Tilt Rotor Squadron 126 (Reinforced) (VMM 126), assist in a mission to drop an Autonomous Lagrangian Thermometric Observer (ALTO) profiling float to collect oceanographic data in the Gulf of Aden from a CH-53E attached to VMM 126, Oct 18. The ALTO is activated by being dropped in the ocean and sends temperature, depth, and salinity measurements through a satellite connection every four days for up to four years at a time. Components of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East region.
