Illinois Army National Guard Officer Candidate William Johnson, of Aurora, talks about fighting at the Hornet’s Nest during the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862, as part of the Illinois Army National Guard Officer Candidate School staff ride to the Shiloh National Military Park near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, May 20. During the Battle of Shiloh, troops were fighting at an impenetrable oak thicket choking the center of the battlefield. The Confederate troops likened the whizzing sound of mini balls at the Union center to a swarm of hornets. After the battle the dense thicket was christened the Hornet’s Nest.
