Upper-class midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy recite the Oath of Leadership on Induction Day for the Class of 2011. More than 1,200 plebes, or freshmen, reported to the academy to begin Plebe Summer, six weeks of intensive indoctrination into military and academy life. The upper-class, also known as the cadre, lead the plebes through basic seamanship, navigation and damage control training, infantry drill exercises and rigorous physical conditioning to prepare them for four years at the Naval Academy.
