Lt. Col. Ryan Pevey, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District commander, provides an update on the USACE recovery efforts during a press conference at the Maui County Government Office Aug. 29. USACE was selected as the lead agency to manage the second phase of debris removal in support of Maui County, the state of Hawai’i and FEMA. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is leading the first phase of the process, which includes removing household hazardous materials.
USACE is working side-by-side with its partners to help survivors recover from the wildfires, and while they will work to be expeditious, they are committed to getting it done right (pono) over fast. This includes employing cultural monitors throughout the entire process to ensure the community and culture is respected.
