Maj. Gen. Michael C. McCurry, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commander, stands with former commanders of the 1st Battalion, 145th Aviation Regiment, in commemoration of the regiment's 60th anniversary at Fort Novosel, Alabama, on Aug. 8, 2023. The unit, also know as the "Old Warriors", traces its lineage back to the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, formed on Sept. 24, 1968, in Vietnam. The unit's slogan is "First in Vietnam", and grew to become one of the largest aviation units serving in that conflict, with five helicopter companies and one fixed wing company. The battalion contributed to the development of air mobile operations, the forerunner of the Army's Air Assault mission set today.
