On August 23, 2023, the U.S. Army Chaplains led a service of commemoration and dedication to the life of Harriet Tubman. Great-great grandniece of Harriet Tubman, Ernestine “Tina” Wyatt (center) graced the ceremony with her presence and posed for pictures with many of the attendees. In 1863, Tubman was recognized as the first woman to lead a military operation when she led 150 soldiers on the Combahee River Raid in South Carolina. Though illiterate her entire life, she came up with a cure for dysentery. Tubman cooked for the 54th Massachusetts before their assault on Fort Wagner. The 12th Surgeon General called her “Nurse Matron” of Fortress Monroe, although she was given neither rank nor compensation. After the war, Tubman cared for the wounded and disabled, among many other acts of selfless service. Even her last words were focused on others, “I go to prepare a place for you.”
