U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. John O’Connor, a Johnston, Pennsylvania native and a low altitude air defense (LAAD) gunner with 2nd LAAD Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2nd Marine Air Wing performs a radio check using a PRC-117G Multiband Networking Manpack Radio during a routine unit level training exercise on Iejima, Okinawa, Japan, July 14, 2023. 2nd LAAD is currently under the Unit Deployment Program with Marine Air Support Squadron 2, Marine Air Control Group 18, Marine Aircraft Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. As the stand-in force aviation combat element, 1st MAW is utilizing expeditionary advanced bases to expand kill chain functions and bridge Marine aviation command and control (C2), sensor, and shooter capabilities across the joint force.
