    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

Australian Defence Force Maj. Lachlan McDonald, the battery commander for 107th Battery, 4th Regiment Royal Australian Artillery, welcomes U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and soldiers with the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, to a combined joint live-fire exercise event on Townshend Island, Australia, July 23, 2023. Joint terminal attack controllers provide a critical battlespace shaping capability by communicating directly with air support assets to call for fire in support of maneuver elements, as part of Talisman Sabre 23. Talisman Sabre is the largest bilateral military exercise between Australia and the United States advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific by strengthening relationships and interoperability among key allies and enhancing our collective capabilities to respond to a wide array of potential security concerns.
