Walter Reed National Military Medical Center facility dog Archie in a formal photo. Archie was given an honorary enlistment in June 2010 as a U.S. Marine Corps colonel. He retired from duty as an honorary USMC gunnery sergeant on March 7, 2017. Facility dogs are often given commissions or are enlisted into a service as a show of respect for their daily duties of comforting patients and staff in need, and for boosting morale and mental health. Archie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on March 28, 2018.
