A wreath, donated by USO Okinawa, is laid in front of a memorial during the Okinawa Memorial Day Ceremony at “The Cornerstone of Peace” in Peace Memorial Park, Mabuni, Itoman City, Okinawa, June 23, 2023. The ceremony, hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Okinawa and USO Okinawa, commemorates the 78th anniversary since the Battle of Okinawa, which resulted in more than 240,000 lives lost. Peace Memorial Park was built in tribute to the hundreds of thousands who died in the “typhoon of steel” and includes the names of thousands of Americans and Japanese who perished in the last great battle of World War II.
