Candidates from Charlie Company, Officer Candidates School, use their belts to carry a 40mm ammunition can weighing 60 pounds up a hill during the first Montford Point Challenge at OCS on Dec. 9. The timed, three and a half mile run, pits a squad of candidates against an obstacle course that honors the sacrifice and heroism of the more than 20,000 African American Marines who trained at Montford Point, N.C., from 1942 to 1949.
