British Royal Marines of 47 Commando (Raiding Group) Royal Marines temporarily assigned to 1st Reconnaissance, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), debark amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) on a combat rubber raiding craft (CRRC), March 27, 2023 in the Sea of Japan. CRRC missions include over-the-horizon covert and overt insertion and extraction, diving, submarine, airborne operations and other specialized missions requiring a compact inflatable craft capable of transporting Marines with speed and stealth. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of USS Makin Island and amphibious transport dock USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations with the embarked 13th MEU to enhance interoperability with Allies and partners and serve as a ready-response force to defend peace and maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
